Steel Baulk Rings - Tech Data November 2002

General Information and Design Brief

Our own team of FIA appendix K racing saloon cars, which for eligibility purposes require gearboxes that retain the original eynchromesh action, plus an extensive race programme, have enabled the development and testing of a new style of baulk ring which will increase transmission reliability under the arduous conditions of International competition. Although heavy duty steel baulk rings are already available from other manufacturers, new parameters were set by our company for a much improved design, firstly to eliminate the inherent requirement of frequent relapping mentioned in a current manufacturer's technical sales literature and the problem of seizure of the baulk ring upon the gear cone (which is not mentioned) but which In fact frequently occurs. Our new product has, so far as we are concerned, surpassed even our exacting criteria and indeed, 45 races and 2.500 miles were completed without the need to fit any replacement baulk rings into the gearboxes being tested under race conditions.

Application

A direct replacement for the OEM parts that will fit without modification to post 1971 Ford Lotus Twin Cam and Mexico transmissions with either three rail or single rail type gear shifting and retaining the Ford original internal parts specification as ex-works. If fitted to transmissions manufactured prior to 1971 then replacement synchroniser hubs may be required (which we can supply).

Specification

These Baulk Rings are manufactured from High Grade alloy steel with redesigned oil grooves that complement the changed friction co-efficient of the hard wearing and oil retentive material applied to the working surface of the internal cone.

Assembly and Fitting Instructions

We recommend soaking new baulk rings in fresh transmission oil for a period of 6 hours before initial assembly into the gearbox.

When fitting these replacement baulk rings to secondhand transmission gears, old synchroniser rings should be used to relap and break the glazed gear cones. Never apply lapping paste to the surface of the newly supplied rings or use these for relapping, as premature failure may result,

Lastly, light running of the gearbox is desirable prior to the rigours of competition. Plentiful gear shifting in all the ratios will help the bedding in of the new parts. This can be achieved on a rolling road, using lower engine revs than when competing or engine testing. The improvement in shift quality resulting from such simple attention (as running-in) will be worthwhile.
